Beauty & Face Masks
Vian Studios' continuing series of blogs featuring individuals & their creativity during these trying times has led me to interview Courtney, a Seattle based makeup artist and hair stylist.
Hi Courtney! Can you tell me a bit about yourself and what you do?
I've been in Seattle for about 13 years, moved here from Scottsdale Arizona. I was born in Australia, where my dad was stationed in the Navy! I have always been passionate about makeup and skincare, so I got my esthetics license about 6 years ago. I worked for Chanel as a skincare consultant and makeup artist then traveled to New York and San Francisco for training. I transitioned into bridal makeup, and a few years ago I ventured into the editorial and commercial world doing hair and makeup. I also work in Social Media/Marketing which has been more of my focus lately since Covid. I am venturing into the world of Permanent Cosmetics beginning September!
You rock our face masks like no other! Have you discovered any new beauty tricks since having to wear face masks?
I love the different patterns of your face masks, and enjoy complimenting my eye look with them! I tend to focus more on the brow + eye area, since that is most of what is seen. I still wear makeup under the mask, but find if i spritz the inside with toner or a makeup setting spray it keeps my makeup in place and doesn't transfer to the mask!
I love the layout of your website, and the photos are gorgeous! Can you tell me about your In Style Magazine photoshoot?
The InStyle shoot was an absolute dream! I have worked with Megan Rapinoe before, so it was really great to connect with her again. I met my beautiful friend Erin Skipley on that photoshoot, who is now training me for permanent makeup! She did the hair and makeup for Sue Bird, while I did hair and makeup for Megan. The photoshoot was for The October 2019 Beauty Issue, so it was really fun to be creative!
How has work-from-home/quarantine affected your work or your day-to-day life?
I think it has been almost a blessing in disguise. It has allowed me to slow down and focus on myself. My fiancé and I have been able to reconnect and enjoy each other's company. Our dog has gotten extra spoiled by having us around so much! My fiancé has since returned to work. He is the Executive Chef and partner at Casco Antiguo, a delish Mexican restaurant with two locations. I've been lucky enough to be able to do most of my work from home, but that will soon change!
Do you have any additional hobbies? How have you been enjoying the summer?
I really enjoy art, reading, going on bike rides, spending time in the sunshine and taking care of my plants! I like to experiment with different makeup looks while listening to podcasts too. I have had a pretty low key summer enjoying all of this beautiful weather!
