The emotional toll of clothes that don't fit

I personally have been guilty of this. I had pants in my closet for two years that I hoped would someday fit again. Every day I would see them and be reminded of that previous weight and feel bad about it. I FINALLY decided to purge them earlier this year. Why did it take me so long to get rid of them?! I felt immediately better once they were gone. There was no longer a reminder of that previous (and short-lived) pant size.

Recently I’ve had two closet appointments where we actually purged clothes that were too big. It’s rare (during COVID-times) but it happens. In both cases, they were HAPPY to let those items go. One client was unbelievably relieved to not be reminded of her bigger size. The amount of space it clears out in the closet is so helpful and the emotional toll that’s lifted is huge. No more daily reminders of the previous sizes! So many of my clients have pre-covid suits in their closets that don’t fit. Not to mention they don’t wear them now that their wardrobes have totally changed. So my advice is please take the clothes out that don’t fit or feel comfortable. If you’d like to save them to try on in 6 months, put them in a box or plastic storage bin under the bed and label it “TRY IN 6 MONTHS” with a date. Happiness awaits in the morning!
