Those Pesky Sentimental Clothes: Tips to Help Move Them Out

Kiss the sentimental clothes that you don’t wear goodbye…….or at least let’s get them out of your closet. I’ve noticed two types of clients when I do closet clean-up appointments. Those who can easily move the old clothes out and those who struggle. I happen to be in the struggle category but I’ve come up with a solution. Last week during my own summer closet purge, I came across my black Dolce & Gabbana tank top from the 1990s. I was reviewing my summer clothes and realized I bring it out every year but don’t wear it because it doesn’t make me feel good. I know exactly where I bought it and that’s partially the problem. I’m attached to the history of the top but that’s about it. A sentimental nightmare. I tried it on and decided that’s it, I’m going to sell it and let someone else enjoy it. One item down.

Take a look at your summer clothes. Are there any items you keep for sentimental reasons? Think about what’s worth keeping or not. I have items I’m not giving up. They’re safe and sound in a bin labeled “80s clothes”. Get them out of the closet and stored safely. No need to have them mixed up with the everyday clothes. The goal is to get dressed quickly in the morning so having just the items we wear is critical. Let me know how you do!

Tips for clearing out the sentimental clothes that don’t fit:

  1. Store them in a bin outside of your main clothing closet and label the bin.

  2. Consign and know that other people will be enjoying it for its second life.

  3. Work with a tailor to have it re-purposed and turned into something new. The hand-me-down fur coat from grandma can be turned into a pillow or blanket

  4. Get advice from a friend. I often text my friends photos and ask their advice if it’s worth keeping.

  5. Find a non-profit in your area that accepts clothing donations.
