Time for a Fresh Start: Tips for a Successful End of Summer Closet Assessment

Part 1 of a 4 Part Series: The Summer to Fall Closet Transition

In Seattle it’s that time of year. Summer clothes one day and a sweater the next. My beloved silver Birkenstocks aren’t getting worn every day anymore. So sad! It’s time to take a look at our summer clothes and make a few decisions. Are you ready?

Let’s talk about the summer items you haven’t worn. I found a short stack of summer tops in my closet that I haven’t worn all summer. The black Dolce Gabbana black cotton tank I bought in the 90s keeps coming out every summer but I’m not wearing it. It doesn’t make me feel good but I feel bad for saying goodbye to an old friend. I tried it on. Okay off it goes to the consignment store, I can do this! Take a look at those items that didn’t get worn, you have a few choices.

  1. Donate to Goodwill, Salvation Army etc… or to a local charity. Many non-profits accept clothing as well.

  2. Take them to a consignment store but beware, those stores are mostly accepting fall items. It might have to wait to sell until next spring.

  3. Sell on Poshmark.com and post your items to sell.

  4. Put them in a separate closet if you have the space or in a bin labeled “Spring/Summer 2022”

  5. Review the summer items that you’d like to keep in your closet through September or early October. Can they be styled a different way?

  6. Okay this is a good start! Let’s have the clothes in your main closet be the one’s that you’re actually wearing. We’ll dig into early fall next time!
