What is a capsule wardrobe?

From the first time I heard it, I didn’t like the name. But I do understand. A small, easy, mix and match wardrobe. I worked at Nordstrom back in the 1980s when Donna Karan launched her “capsule” collection. It was expensive and the fabrics were incredible, soft, and luxurious. Her bodysuits were revolutionary at the time. Before that, bodysuits were meant for dancing, now they were headed into the boardroom. Her idea of a capsule collection was bodysuits, skirts, pants, turtlenecks, and jackets. We’ve come a long way. Now the term “capsule” is not just about a clothing line, it’s about a lifestyle. I’m a minimalist with a small closet so this works just fine for me. Don’t we wear the same items over and over anyway? My capsule wardrobe consists of jeans, black t-shirts, a Veronica Beard suit jacket and some fun shoes. That’s it! As a stylist, I hear my clients requesting easy, mix and match wardrobes all the time. What I don’t want for them is a BORING wardrobe. Simple is great but let’s keep it stylish and modern. Here are my top 5 tips to help you get there. For information on my styling packages click here.

  1. Review your jeans and try them on. Do you really need all of them? Jeans are the basis for our capsule wardrobe. Let's have them fit perfectly and make you feel great!

  2. How are your basic t-shirts? Throw out any that have worn out and replace them. T-shirts are one item that’s easy to find.

  3. A capsule wardrobe includes at least one great, versatile dress. Do you have it? Need help finding one?

  4. A well-fitting suit jacket is mandatory unless you're retired and even then I think it’s fun to have. My favorite is the Veronica Beard “scuba” jacket.

  5. Shoes! A nice pair of sneakers, boots, and sandals and you’re all set to get your capsule wardrobe started.
